Roof Repair

Epdm Coatings asked:

It is very important that individuals check their roof for needed repairs regularly. Most opt for spring because of the fair weather and due to the fact that it immediately precedes winter, which is often troublesome for many roofs. Heavy snow buildup, ice dams and other harsh weather can wreak havoc on shingles, gutters and the overall structure of the roof. This makes spring an ideal time for detecting repairs. With that being said, it is very important that homeowners also inspect their work immediately following a storm or other mishap that may have resulted in any type of roof damage that may require repair.

When there starts roof leaks after heavy, wind-driven rain, it is usually caused by a problem with the windows or siding. During the winter, a roof leak along the inside walls or basement is most commonly caused by an ice dam. In this situation, melting snow and ice will travel over the back of the gutter or through the side of gutter spears and down the walls. An ice dam is caused by inadequate intake and tire ventilation.

When repairing a roof leak, keep in mind that 90% of all roof leaks are caused by improper installation or defective flashings. Paradigms of flashings include chimney, step, apron and valley where two roofs join together. During the repairs, it is necessary to look for any roof deterioration that could possibly lead to further problems if left untreated. If leaks are ignored, the structure of the entire home may be weakened if and when the frame begins to rot from continued exposure to dampness.

In addition to above, the improper installation of roof shingles, which are sometimes fixed incorrectly, may be a necessary repair that needs to be addressed. If roof shingles are missing, these will need to be restored as soon as possible.

Invariably, things break. This is part of the unavoidable second law of thermodynamics. Entropy inevitably drags everything into a state of increasingly less order. The same applies to your roof. Since you undoubtedly desire your home to remain intact and you are already inquiring into roof repair, inquiring into options as to how to repair your roof is important. By comparing many different sources of information you will be able to better tell which is more reliable and what the general consensus is.

Roof repair companies will almost certainly advise you to replace your roof and pay them to do so. It is wise to investigate alternative sources of information, specifically fair sources which are not seeking to sell anything. As Immanuel Kant says, “virtue is best known when people are disinterested.” If the source of your information has nothing to gain from taking either option, more weight can clearly be given to such advice, depending on the level of practical experience and technical knowledge of that source.

Replacement is almost always much more expensive than repair, though replacement is sometimes necessary when roof maintenance has not been carried out well over the years. A leaking roof is a major problem because it can cause structural damage to your home and increased damage to the roof itself. In order to avoid this, it is important to repair the problem in the best way possible.

Avoiding Roofing Repair Scams

Tom Schlund asked:

In a May 2009 report, the “Denver Post” reported that “400 Coloradoans [had been] taken in [a] roof-repair scam.” This article shed light on a problem that unsuspecting homeowners across the country face every single day: Not all contractors-roofing or otherwise-are who they claim to be.

Sad but true, consumers must take a proactive stance and investigate the (so-called) professionals they hire before putting down a cash deposit, or worse, paying in full for a home repair upfront. Of course, faced with an emergency situation like a leaky roof in the midst of a snowy January or a downpouring April, such detective work often falls by the wayside. In a rush to get the job done, many a homeowner will fall for what might otherwise present itself as an obvious money-robbing scheme.

In the case of the scammed Coloradoans, a roofing company approached “residents about inspecting their roof for possible damage, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.” In other words, the victimized individuals were sought out instead of doing the seeking, thereby giving them plenty of opportunity to do their research before swallowing the crafty bait hook, line and sinker.

Insulated Roof Panels For Housing – Pros and Cons

Elena Williams asked:

Structurally insulated roof panels allow builders to create an energy-efficient housing envelope that panders to the demand for green buildings in the market today. Insulated panels can offer superior energy efficiency as compared to the regular stick-frame constructions. And with the increasing concern over climate change and expensive energy alternatives, builders are becoming wise to the appeal of using this material in their work.

Insulated roof panels are made from foam insulation which is packed in between two sheets of either board or plywood. Fiber cement panels also may be used. This design is resource and energy-efficient, as well as being strong and durable. They create a barrier to heat loss that can save almost half the energy typically spent on heating and cooling homes.

Roof Trim

bloom media asked:

There are many types of roof trim in use today. First there is rake board trim, which acts as an overhang along the sides of the pitched section of the roof (A – frame). Rake trim in its most basic form can consist of one piece of 3/4″ pine, poplar, or composite material which is padded out with a piece of strapping to create space for the sidewall coverage. In some places and on higher end homes the rake may be much more elaborate, including a frieze board, soffit, fascia and crown molding.

The rake board trim acts not only as coverage for the top of the sidewall, but as a starting point for the roof shingles. The rake is generally covered with aluminum L channel which creates a straight line where each course of roof shingle is started.

Another type of roof trim is the detail which covers what is known as the bird’s mouth. The bird’s mouth is the end of the rafter tails that overhang the exterior walls. This section of roof trim is usually tied into the corner boards and most commonly consists of a frieze board, soffit, fascia and bed molding. There are also many ways to create fancier details such as adding dental and crown molding.

Where the rake trim, bird’s mouth trim and corner boards meet there is an additional piece of roof trim known as an ear board. This piece is a triangle shaped board that is nailed to the ends of the bird’s mouth soffit and fascia in order to keep the look of the rake board uniform with the rest of the roof trim.

In the same vein as the rake, the bird’s mouth trim is also a meeting point between sidewall and roof shingles. The sidewall generally butts up to the frieze or soffit while the fascia acts as a starting point for the roof shingles. Unlike the aluminum L channel that is applied to the rake trim, aluminum known as starter vent is generally used on fascia trim. Although in some applications the soffit has venting, in which case the traditional L channel is used.

The starter vent at the soffit (or fascia) is a critical element. It allows air to flow up through each rafter bay to the peak of the roof where it is allowed to escape through what is known as ridge vent. Ridge vent is a rolled out mesh or composite material that is covered with shingle caps.

Traditionally most roof trim has been 1″x8″ # 2 or clear pine. This has been replaced in many circumstances by rough sawn 1″x8″ that is subsequently covered with sheet aluminum or vinyl. Aluminum and vinyl are cost effective ways to avoid painting, maintaining and eventually replacing roof trim.

In recent years some high end houses have veered towards products like Azec, which is a solid composite 1″x8″ stock that looks much like traditional trim from a distance but has the long lasting, no maintenance qualities of Aluminum and Vinyl. Unfortunately its very high price leaves in un-available to many.

Roof trim is very different in many parts of the country, but the one universal certainty is that technological advances are playing a major role in the materials we use to trim our roofs.

Not Just GREEN with Insulating Concrete Forms!

Tee Davis asked:

Why Insulating Concrete Forms?

According to Mark Quinn of Quinn Construction –

“If you’re looking for a really innovative building system — one that will provide longevity and efficient life cycle costs while still making the end product as sustainableas possible — then Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) is the answer. While sometimes the cost may not be on par up front with traditional stick framing, for homeowners looking for longevity, much lower utility and maintenance costs, ICFs are the smart way to go! So in the end, my ultimate goal is to not just build green but to build safe, comfortable, energy efficient, affordable and low maintenance homes and commercial buildings that will last for many generations.”

Services and benefits offered are:

Building “near and net zero” energy usage custom homes

Offering state-of-the-art geothermal, wind power, PV solar, and ICF energy efficient building systems

Integrating energy efficient technology with commercial and residential ICF and SIPS systems

Everybody needs buildings that are safe to occupy and are highly energy efficient. Mark delivers! He builds with structural insulating panels (SIPS) and insulating concrete forms (ICFs). Building energy efficient projects for over 10 years, Mark is definitely not new to “green buildings.” Mark owns Quinn Construction and he is a very experienced ICF Project Manager and ICF Installer for custom residential and commercial projects. We look forward to presenting past and ongoing construction photos to help you in your decision to build better buildings with Quinn Construction.

You hear so much about “Green” buildings and materials that we think some in our industry have forgotten that buildings are supposed to be strong and safe as well.  We feel strongly that many buildings today are being constructed of materials that will be fast to deterioriate due to insects, normal wear and tear, and shoddy workmanship and will not withstand even a moderate disaster.  Insulation materials, windows and doors are not adequately saving energy even if they are considered “green.”  It’s really not enough to be “Green” when utility bills come due in exceptionally hot summer or cold winter seasons.  ICF products will keep your family and business safer and will render your monthly utility bills at an astounding lower cost.

Allied ICF Systems and Quinn Construction strongly support bringing America back to a “vibrant self sufficient domestic energy producing and domestic consuming nation.” Build with Quinn Construction now and help bring back American construction jobs!

The photo below is just one of many completed custom homes using insulating concrete forms and other sustainable materials.

Recycled Roof Tiles Can be a Great Green Alternative

Chris Jenkinson asked:

Do you feel guilty about the amount of plastic bottles you send to the landfill? Thanks to many innovations, your plastic bottle could now become part of a future building project in the form of a number of potential materials. One example would be recycled roof tiles.

Recycled roof tiles are emerging as a great option for builders and for homeowners or industrial / commercial building owners. As an alternative to slate, these recycled materials help keep more plastic waste out of the landfills by transforming plastic bottles, for example, into polymer that is turned into interlocking roof tiles.

Great for Building Owners

Recycled roof tiles are available in a variety of styles so your roof will look good. This durable material can withstand the elements very well, is fine in harsh weather conditions, and is fire retardant.

There are organic benefits as well. It’s not going to be susceptible to fungus, mould, or to insects. It’s also unbreakable and due to the interlocking method you won’t have to be concerned about susceptibility to burglaries with this system.

Great for Builders

Many builders find recycled roof tiles made with recycled polymer that comes from things such as water bottles a great option for a number of reasons related to ease of installation, safety, and labour costs. They’re easy to install as they’re lightweight making installation faster and easier and with less risk to labourers carrying them at heights. They are an easy sell to people interested in installing a new roof that’s a more sustainable alternative to concrete, slate or other typical roofing materials.

Great for the Environment

The more that people can do to mimimise their carbon footprint, the better. Choosing to recycle and choosing to use recycled material wherever possible can make a difference.

There are more environmentally sustainable building materials to choose from than ever. Renovations might seem wasteful when you consider the fact that material you’re ripping off will have to go to a landfill but when you replace that material with something greener and recycled, you’re doing something great for the future of the planet.

What should you look for when choosing among recycled roof tile options? You’ll want something that looks good, meets rigorous consumer standards for where you live you’ll want something that’s reasonably or comparably priced, and you’ll want something that meets your needs from aesthetics purposes as well. Why not investigate some greener options?

Thin Film Solar Shingles Help To Create Energy Efficient Homes

Ben Kaylor asked:

Solar Panels, or Photovoltaic Systems, are solar cells that capture light energy from the sun and convert it directly into electricity. Attaching photovoltaic cells to roofing materials has become simpler with the innovation of thin film PV roofing systems used to replace flat roofing materials or shingles in roofing systems.

The onset of the Zero-Net Energy Commercial Building Initiative is part of an effort to reduce the strain of commercial buildings on energy resources. Solar shingles and Building-integrated photovoltaics are increasingly being incorporated in new construction. Home owners have also become more interested with solar energy as prices have dropped and styles have become more adaptable. New thin film PV roofing systems bypass the attachment of photovoltaics to the roof by doubling as roofing materials. Coupled with keen building construction and green design solar shingles offer a way to utilize the space of your roof to produce free energy.

New research is creating more attractive and affordable ways to produce cells with high-efficiency. Flexible solar cell roof shingles offer residential home owners the opportunity to install PV systems that bend and curve to blend with roof tiles. Manufacturing techniques are currently in development that use a special ink to print semiconductors. With a low manufacturing cost thin film CIGs, solar shingles, aim to overtake their silicone predecessor by offering efficiency, low cost, and longevity.

The burning of fossil fuels and petroleum have largely contributed to a rising level of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Early in the 20th century scientist discovered and, less than one year ago, the EPA formally declared CO2 as a dangerous pollutant because it absorbs and emits thermal infrared radiation causing the Earth’s overall temperature to be higher. The world’s energy demand is growing by 2.3% every year. New taxes hope to reduce our use of fossil fuels by making renewable energy more competitive.

Studies suggest that we are currently at a point where the maximum rate of global petroleum extraction has been reached, contributing to the belief that prices for oil will continue to rise as to will our need for a widely available renewable energy resource. Scientific research has also shown that our Sun potentially delivers 400 trillion trillion watts, of solar energy, in 1 second. Tapping into this renewable energy resource, recently released thin film photovoltaic systems can offset a homes energy bill cost from 40%-80%. The potential for a zero net energy home offers a solution to accompany the new regulations on vehicles. Currently solar energy amounts for less than 0.9% of energy with fossil fuels totaling 86%. DOW has projected the solar shingle sales will generate $11 billion of revenue in 2020.

Metro Atlanta Roofing Options

Wrightway Construction LLC asked:

There are a number of things to consider when selecting a new roof system. Of course, cost and durability head the list, but aesthetics and architectural style are important, too. The right roof system for your home or building is one that balances these five considerations. The following roofing products commonly are used for steep-slope structures.

Asphalt shingles possess an overwhelming share of the U.S. steep-slope roofing market and can be reinforced with organic or fiberglass materials. Although asphalt shingles reinforced with organic felts have been around much longer, fiberglass-reinforced products now dominate the market.

Organic shingles consist of a cellulose-fiber (i.e., wood) base that is saturated with asphalt and coated with colored mineral granules. Fiberglass shingles consist of a fiberglass mat, top-and-bottom layers of asphalt, and mineral granules.

Asphalt shingles’ fire resistances, like most other roofing materials, are categorized by Class A, B or C. Class A signifies the most fire-resistant; Classes B and C denote less fire resistance. Generally, most fiberglass shingles have Class A fire ratings, and most organic shingles have Class C ratings.

A shingle’s reinforcement has little effect on its appearance. Organic and fiberglass products are available in laminated (architectural) grades that offer a textured appearance. Zinc or copper-coated ceramic granules also can be applied to organic or fiberglass products to protect against algae attack, a common problem in warm, humid parts of the United States. Both types of shingles also are available in a variety of colors.

Regardless of their reinforcing type and appearance, asphalt shingles’ physical characteristics vary significantly. When installing asphalt shingles, NRCA recommends use of shingles that comply with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards-ASTM D 225 for organic shingles and ASTM D 3462 for fiberglass shingles. These standards govern the composition and physical properties of asphalt shingles; not all asphalt shingles on the market comply with these standards. If a shingle product complies with one of these standards, it is typically noted in the manufacturer’s product literature and on the package wrapper.

 Tile Roofs

There are a number of different materials that homeowners may choose from when selecting tile roofs.

The first area of concern should be your overall budget. You’ll find that tile roofs are versatile and durable and are a great roofing option.

However, with all of that variety, there is a wide price range to choose from as well. When considering budget options for tile roofs, you should take into consideration the projected cost of maintenance and care to keep your roof in perfect order.

Some of the most popular tile roofs include clay tiles, cement, Spanish tile, steel, wood, aluminum, and slate. Vanderbuilders can show you many different samples and help you determine which roofing tile is best for your roofing needs. It is always good to choose tiles that will withstand the natural elements in your particular location.  It is important to realize that just as important as the type of tile roof you select is the  underlayment that you install before the roof. Tile roofs serve to keep your home safe and protected from the elements of nature. The underlayment is the supportive structure that keeps your roof waterproof.

Tiki Hut Roofing – Get Informed

Jenny Gremoland asked:

Lo and behold the tiki hut and tiki decor in general is coming back in style and it seems that just about everyone now wants to have a quaint tiki hut sitting in their backyard. Even if you don’t have a swimming pool, a tiki hut or bar area will draw your family and guests like ants to spilled Pepsi.

The Grass Roof Look

Of course you have several design options to choose from, as far as the basic structure is concerned but when it comes to the roof of your tiki hut, you are rather limited with regards to its basic look.

Grass or Palm Fronds

It’s grass or palm leaves stitched or stapled down in a few different ways but in the end it will have that basic natural look that comes from the tropics where this type of roof is still in common use.

Tiki Hut Grass Shingles

Rule number one, is that the roof must be rather steep. That is unless you are using new tiki style grass shingles. These are in fact a standard manufactured shingle that has a shaggy hairdo made out of synthetic grass.

A Much Better Product

They are applied in the same fashion as standard asphalt shingles and shed water much better than standard grass or palm fronds. They also last much longer too and are also far less of a fire hazard.

Stapled Down on a Plywood Sheeted Roof

Another benefit if this type of shingle is that it is applied on top of a standard sheeted plywood roof. This might not mean much to you at first but wait until you see how difficult it is to construct a lattice work roof structure out of sticks, such as you will find in the tropics.

Tiki Hut Accessories

However; if you are determined to go with natural thatch or palm fronds, they too are available over the Internet and you can also purchase this type of roofing material that has been treated with fire retardant. Either way you go though, one thing is for certain and that is that you will also need plenty of tiki hut accessories to complete the total look of your tiki hut.
